Some of our favorite projects involve transforming compact spaces into functional, beautiful rooms. A small kitchen or bathroom does not have to feel like a compromise. With the right design strategy, you can double the perceived space without adding a single square foot.
The first rule of small-space design is to go vertical. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry draws the eye upward and provides storage that would otherwise consume precious floor area. In kitchens, we often install tall pantry cabinets with pull-out shelves that make every inch accessible.
Mirrors and reflective surfaces are the oldest trick in the book — because they work. A mirrored backsplash or large wall mirror in a small bathroom bounces light around the room and creates depth. Pair this with light-colored walls and the space instantly feels twice as large.
Furniture-style vanities with legs, wall-mounted toilets, and floating shelves all free up visual floor space. When your eye sees more floor, the room feels bigger. We recently renovated a 5-by-7-foot bathroom that now feels spacious thanks to a wall-hung vanity and a frameless glass shower enclosure.
For kitchens, a galley layout with a single wall of full-height cabinets is often more efficient than an L-shape that crowds the room. We also love incorporating pull-out cutting boards, corner carousel units, and toe-kick drawers that reclaim forgotten spaces.
Finally, consistency is key. Using the same material on countertops and backsplashes, or extending floor tile into the shower without a curb, creates an uninterrupted visual flow. Small spaces reward bold simplicity more than busy patterns.
